Blog Challenge #1

For our first blog challenge, we have to find a field involving science that we are interested in.  I have always been interested in the medical field.  I either want to become a doctor, a physician, or a registered nurse.  The field that I am picking right now is a registered nurse (RN). Maybe after that, I might go further in the medical field.  What a typical (RN) does is provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.  They also record patients' medical histories and symptoms.

The first college I was thinking of going to is Carlow University.  They offer certificates, bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.  There are many things that are required to get into this university.  The classes are: 4 years of English, 2 years of history. 3 years of math, 2 years of social studies, 3 years of science, and 4 years of academic electives.  Class rank and GPA is very important.  The nursing major requires 123 credits.

Some of the required classes to graduate are:
1. Introduction to professional nursing and informatics.
2. Nutrition
3. Concepts of Gerontology
4. Pharmacology in nursing
5. Nursing research
6. Legal, ethical and political issues in health care
7. Health assessments/fundamentals
8. Health promotion and disease prevention.
Another class that is offered is Nursing Care of Children and Adolescents Clinical.  This class focuses on bio psychosocial needs of children and adolescents. There is also a class called Community Health Nursing Clinical.  It is a senior level course focusing on the health of the community and various community health nursing roles through which the health care needs of the individual.  There are many more classes that are required in the 4 years you need to graduate from Carlow University.

The second college that I am interested in is the University of Pittsburgh.  Their nursing program was ranked 7th in U.S. news and World reports' "2011 America's Best Graduate Schools.  PITT's nursing program offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.  The high school requirements to get accepted into this university are: 2 years of a foreign language, 3 years of math, 3 years of science, 3 years of science lab, 2 years of social studies, and 3 years of academic electives. Like every university/college, your class rank and your GPA are very important to PITT.

There are many classes that the University of Pittsburgh offer in their nursing program.  Pathophysiologic Foundations of Nursing Care is one of the courses you are required to take in your years in college.  This course examines mechanisms that produce disease and injury, the ways in which the body responds to these mechanisms and the clinical manifestations produced by the body's response.  Another course is called Nursing Management of The Adult With Acute/Chronic health problems.  This course focuses on nursing care of adults.  Students will be guided in critical thinking exercises and the use of therapeutic interventions and research findings in the management of adults.  More courses are:
1. Transition into professional nursing practice
2. Exploring cancer care
3. Differently diagnosed theory across life span
4. Advance pharmacology
5. Practicum in nursing systems

The third college that I am really interested in is IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania).  In their nursing program, they offer certificate, associate, bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.  There isn't really required high school classes that you need to be able to get in, but there are recommended classes.  These classes are 4 years of English, 2 years of a foreign language, 2 years of history, 3 years of math, 3 years of science, 2 years of science lab, and 3 years of social studies.  What is very important to IUP is your GPA and your standardizes test scores.

A course that is offered in the nursing program at IUP is called Foundations of Child Health.  This course focuses on conditions that effect the health of children.  It also provides an overview of the structure and function of selected body systems.  Another course name is Healthy People-Promoting Wellness.  This course introduces students through the pathway of health and wellness through contributions through one's environment and community.  There are many more courses on the list like:
1. Disaster Awareness
2. Professional Nursing
3. Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing
4. Care of Child and Family
5. Maternal-Neonate Health
6. Adult Health
7. Nursing Management

I chose these 3 colleges because I heard many great things about their nursing program.  After researching, I started to really like them.  With all of this information, I will probably apply to them next year when I am a senior.  There are many other colleges that I would like to attend, but we only had to list 3 and CARLOW, PITT, and IUP were the first ones to pop into my head.  I also went on a college tour through CARLOW and IUP, which I really liked.

The career that somehow involves science that I wish to peruse would be to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. I have wanted to become a heart surgeon ever since I was younger. My brother was diagnosed with a heart murmur, and I had no clue what it was, so I was interested in it. I began to go to all of his appointments to make sure he was alright, then I started to want to become a heart doctor just like his and to I wanted to help people just like they helped him. After I decided I wanted to be a heart doctor I started reading about the anatomy of the human body and how it all works, as I was reading a page about the circulatory system my biology teacher told me that a teacher takes several students to see an open heart surgery, and I want and signed up as fast as I could. Then during the surgery I realized that I wanted to be that person that preforms the surgery, I wanted to be the person that helped the patients stay alive and keep living afterwards.
Johns Hopkins University in Maryland
There are very many requirements for medical school. Most requirements revolve around you work ethic and grades. The requirements are academic excellence, leadership, service compassion and humanism, diversity, and the ability to work in a team. All of which are very easy to maintain and accomplish with work. There are many classes and course you would need to take to be a heart surgeon but first you need to take classes to become a doctor. The classes are all revolve around Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biological Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Human Genetics and Molecular Biology, Immunology, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Molecular Biophysics, Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, Pathobiology, Cellular and Molecular Physiology, Functional Anatomy and Evolution, History of Science, and Medicine and Technology. The classes that are necessary to take are ones that are related to which ever form of doctor you wish to be.
Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
Perelman School of Medicine encourages students to have a well-rounded education in liberal arts, while also taking the sciences that are appropriate for your field. The science courses should include laboratory experience to provide you with the knowledge of how it may be in a real life scenario. They also wish for you to have motivation, intellect, and personal character. The programs that a medical student would go through are separated into six modules. The first module is your core principles. The second and third modules revolve around the integrative systems and disease.  The forth module is your required clinical clerkships. The fifth and sixth modules are electives, selective, scholarly pursuit, humanism and professionalism.
Harvard Medical School
There are multiple requirements for applying to Harvard. First you should have above a 3.92 gpa. Then on your sat scores you should have a 2350. The classes and courses that are need to graduate are:  Preclinical Courses Year I, Preclinical Courses Year II, Health, Science, & Technology (HST) Courses, Core Clinical Clerkships, Elective Courses (Clinical and Non-Clinical Courses), HMS-Division of Medical Sciences Courses.

Wednesday morning I went over my research project from last year and practiced my PowerPoint presentation because the second year students have to give a presentation to the first year students today. When I came back from lunch my secondary mentor from last summer came in and she started to train me on the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) so I can start scanning my own stubs by myself, or at least know what I am doing.
Today I am to give my presentation and later in the day I will continue to get trained on the SEM.

June 25, Summary

Today I recorded what I did on CHARMM-GUI on LaTeX so that what I do could be a reference for others to use in the future.  I had to record everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, including any errors I made.  The LaTeX document that I made is sort of like a tutorial, or walkthrough for one of the many feature of CHARMM.  I described each step I did when using the free energy calculator for ligand binders because this interface is quick and efficient.  I learned that CHARMM biggest error is about 1~2 kcal off its calculations, but compared to other program where it would be off by 10 kcal, which makes CHARMM really useful.  Right Now I have to use every feature the ligand binder has to offer so that I would know everything about this interface that everybody wants to learn how to use.

Amber Latona Day 8 6/26 BLOG

Well, today was not interesting.

My mentors were not here today because they had to attend a meeting all day. I didn't start my project yet, but I re read all of my notes so I could gain a better understanding. I took some more notes on the history of blue pigments. There have been multiple blue pigments dating back the Egyptians. Some other blue pigments are called Azurite, Cobalt, and Ultramarine.
Azurite is common in Europe. It is made from copper, which has been crushed and powdered since ancient times.
Cobalt has been used for centuries for glass and ceramics. This color became popular for paintings.
Ultramarine is made from grinding Lapis Lazuli. Ultramarine was used during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This was also used for art, but also very expensive.

I got a schedule of important dates today as well. I like schedules because I like being prepared and organized.

Hopefully by the end of the week, I can get started with some more hands on stuff!

Well today wasn't very interesting. I really had nothing to do all day because my co-mentor and everyone in my lab were in a meeting all day so I wasn't able to work in the lab and start rinsing my reactions. Now I have to wait until Friday to begin that because the meeting/conference they're at is a two day thing. Then come time for the meeting today we realized there wasn't any mentors here to listen in on it an ask questions . So the meeting go moved to tomorrow and hopefully we can present.

Although my Co-mentor wont be back until Friday I plan on reviewing the things from last year. Im going to try and get myself back into the swing of things and keep myself busy while I wait for them to get back. Hopefully I can rinse my reactions on Friday.

6-25-14 Summary

Today, I learned how to do something new.  Since I had all of my data already done, now was the time to put it all on a graph and show the initial deposition and the poste rinse of the cobalt pieces.  I was showed how to use a program on the computer to make my 2 separate graphs.  After I did the first one with one of my mentors in my lab, I went over the process again with the 30 minute pieces.  This process took some time so my day went pretty quick.  Then, I had to add my results onto my paper that I had to write for my meeting tomorrow.  Another thing that I did was put 3 new cobalt pieces in my solution.  This time, I did it for 1 hour instead of 1 minute and 30 minutes.  Hopefully, this time my monolayers will form and be stable.   I also worked on the blog challenge for the first time today.  I am almost done with it so it should be done by tomorrow.  In conclusion, today was a very productive day.
